The secret to gorgeous hair is easier than you think! Here are my five pillars of healthy hair habits that will take you from frizzy to fabulous in no time.
1. Don’t turn away from healthy fats!
Did you know that dry scalp and dull hair can be attributed to a deficiency in healthy fats? Healthy fats, such as Omega 3 fats, nourish and condition your hair follicles, giving you strong and shiny hair. Eat oily fish 2-3 times a week, such as salmon, tuna, fresh mackerel, or even anchovies! Not a fan of fish? You can also get tons of Omega 3’s from ground flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, and walnuts.
2. Take in some protein
Did you know hair is composed of protein? If your diet lacks in protein, it will show when your hair gets weak and brittle, and eventually starts falling out! Many of us lack protein in our diets, so it’s important to make sure you get a portion at each meal and snack throughout the day. Lean meat, fish, eggs, lentils, beans, yogurt, chickpeas, tofu, nuts, and seeds are just a few of the most common places to get some good protein.
3. Eat the orange vegetables!
When you see an orange vegetable, you should only see one thing-- Vitamin A! This awesome vitamin stimulates production of sebum, which is a healthy oil that keeps your scalp moisturized and nourished. This oil acts as a natural, body-produced conditioner for our hair follicles, giving it a glossy shine. Are carrots the only thing coming to mind? You can also try pumpkin, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes!
4. An egg per day
Besides being extremely tasty, eggs are extremely rich in Biotin and Vitamin B12-- two essential compounds for healthy hair growth. They are so essential, in fact, that a deficiency in either can result in total hair loss! Biotin is even found in shampoo. Need I say more? Don’t ignore the yolks, folks. This is where all the great nutrients are found. Different varieties of frittatas and omelettes, poached, scrambled, or fried eggs will do. Worried about cholesterol? You shouldn’t. Research has disproved the belief that eggs raise cholesterol levels.
5. Coconut Oil, Coconut Oil, COCONUT OIL!!!
Soften and add great shine with a coconut oil mask! Did you know that natives of tropical, coastal world regions have been using coconut oil for thousands of years? This in turn provides shiny, thick hair to flaunt. Coconut oil not only naturally nourishes hair, but adds condition and shine as well without ever involving harsh chemicals. Just apply a ¼ cup of warmed coconut oil to your wet or dry hair and leave in for an hour before rinsing.
